The practical layer

Manipur essentials.

The unglamorous details that decide whether a trip runs smoothly. Written for the traveller on a mid-range Android with a train to catch — no padding.

SIM & network reality

Jio and Airtel have the widest footprint. The Imphal valley is solid 4G; hill district headquarters (Ukhrul, Senapati, Churachandpur, Tamenglong) are generally usable, with dead zones between towns and on treks.

Buy your SIM before arriving if you can — activation is faster in metros. Internet shutdowns have occurred during past disturbances; download offline maps and keep this site's emergency page saved (it works offline).

Cash, ATMs & UPI

Cash first. Withdraw in Imphal, where ATMs of the major banks cluster around Thangal Bazar and MG Avenue. District-town ATMs exist but can be empty or offline.

UPI works in Imphal shops and increasingly beyond, but Ima Keithel stalls, shared wingers and hill-village purchases are frequently cash-only. Carry small notes — breaking a ₹500 at a vegetable stall is nobody's favourite moment.

Power

Imphal's supply is reasonable but outages happen; hill towns see more frequent and longer cuts. A 10,000 mAh power bank is the single most useful thing in your bag. Sockets are standard Indian Type C/D, 230V.

Drones & photography

Manipur is a sensitive border state. Drone flying is governed by India's Drone Rules 2021 and the DGCA Digital Sky zone map — much of the state falls in restricted zones, and local permissions matter as much as central ones. If a drone is essential to your trip, research permits well in advance; do not assume valley rules apply near borders, camps or dams.

Ask before photographing people — especially at markets, shrines and in villages. A greeting from the phrasebook first, camera second.

Packing by season

Oct–MarLayers. Valley days are mild, hill nights drop near freezing Dec–Jan. A real jacket for Ukhrul/Tamenglong, sunscreen everywhere.
Apr–MayLight clothes + a shell for pre-monsoon showers. Trekking shoes for Shirui lily season.
Jun–SepProper rain gear, quick-dry everything, a dry bag for electronics. Leech socks if trekking. Expect road delays — pack patience.

Travelling well

  • Carry your ILP at all times — checks happen at district gates and on highways.
  • Dress modestly at temples and in villages; shoes off at shrines and many homes.
  • Hills and valley have distinct cultures and histories — let people describe themselves rather than assuming.
  • Buy crafts directly from makers where possible: Longpi pottery in Longpi, phanek and phee from Ima Keithel weavers.
  • Loktak's phumdis are a living ecosystem and Keibul Lamjao is the sangai's only home — no litter, no drones over the park, licensed boats only.
