GoManipur

Made here, and only here

Crafts worth carrying home.

Manipur holds one of India's richest sets of GI-tagged products for its size. The rule of thumb: buy at source or at Ima Keithel, directly from the women who made it.

Chak-hao (black rice)

GI-tagged

Valley districts

Manipur's aromatic black rice, grown here for centuries and GI-tagged in 2020. Deep purple when cooked, nutty, antioxidant-rich — the base of the state's signature kheer and increasingly of everything from cakes to beer elsewhere in India.

Where to buy · Any Imphal market; Ima Keithel grain sellers. Vacuum-packed 1kg bags travel well.

Longpi black pottery (Longpi Ham)

Longpi Khullen & Longpi Kajui, Ukhrul

Matte-black cookware shaped without a wheel from a serpentinite-and-clay blend found only near Longpi — a Tangkhul craft passed through families. Cooks beautifully, keeps food warm for hours, and looks like sculpture.

Where to buy · Direct from makers in Longpi village (the best way), or Imphal craft emporia. Artisan contacts to be verified and listed.

Moirang Phee

GI-tagged

Moirang, Bishnupur

The cloth of the Moirang pattern — the stepped, pointed moirang pheejin border woven along the edge — GI-tagged and instantly recognisable on phaneks and shawls across the valley.

Where to buy · Weavers in Moirang; Ima Keithel handloom rows.

Wangkhei Phee

GI-tagged

Wangkhei, Imphal East

A gossamer-fine white cotton weave — almost translucent, patterned with delicate floral motifs — traditionally woven in the Wangkhei locality of Imphal for ceremonial wear. GI-tagged.

Where to buy · Wangkhei weaving households; Ima Keithel; state handloom emporia.

Shaphee Lanphee

GI-tagged

Hill–valley tradition

The embroidered honour cloth — a dark shawl with bold red-and-white motifs, historically conferred by Meitei kings on Naga chiefs for acts of merit. GI-tagged, and still a garment of standing.

Where to buy · Ima Keithel and craft emporia; hill-district weavers.

Kauna reed craft

GI-tagged

Wetland areas around Loktak

Mats, bags, baskets and furniture woven from kauna, the water reed of Manipur's wetlands. Light, tough and quietly beautiful — the craft supports thousands of households around the lake. GI-tagged.

Where to buy · Ima Keithel; craft shops in Imphal; cooperatives near Loktak.

Tamenglong orange

GI-tagged

Tamenglong

A mandarin of unusual sweetness grown on Tamenglong's hillsides, GI-tagged and celebrated with its own December festival. In season, roadside stalls across the state sell them by the bagful.

Where to buy · December–January: markets statewide; best at source in Tamenglong.

Sirarakhong Hathei chilli

GI-tagged

Sirarakhong village, Ukhrul

A crimson chilli grown only around one Tangkhul village — prized for colour and flavour more than raw heat, GI-tagged, and honoured with its own August festival. Sold dried; it makes the definitive morok metpa.

Where to buy · Dried, from Ukhrul markets and Sirarakhong directly; some Imphal stores.

Artisan and cooperative contacts are being collected and verified — buy-direct phone numbers will be added to each craft as they're confirmed.
